Rumor: Apple to Adopt NVIDIA Ion Platform
Jan 16, 2009 - 6:21 AM - by AppleChic

This rumor is somewhat controversial, but a PC enthusiast website and supposedly an NVIDIA partner is saying that Apple will refresh the Mac mini in March and will use NVIDIA's Ion platform, which pairs NVIDIA's 9400M system controller and integrated GPU with Intel's low power Atom processor.

The site, Tom's Hardware, says:

"An Nvidia partner confirmed to us that Apple was the first to receive samples of Nvidia's Ion platform, which we covered extensively during CES. In fact, Apple received prototype units long before Nvidia partners who opted to work on Ion. We're told that some partners still only have blue prints of Ion."

The rumor also goes that the release will come about the time of the CeBIT computer expo beginning March 3rd in Hanover, Germany. Tom's Hardware also speculates that the Mac mini will remain the same size it is now and be priced about the same, around $500-$700.

If this rumor comes to fruition than this would be the first time... [Read More]

Instinctiv Shuffle is a smarter shuffle. It knows what musical mood you're in based on what you skip and when, and learns your preferences the more you use it. Works well out of the box, gets better as it gets to know you (but not in a creepy way). It was released on 1.x devices, and folks have long been waiting for a build that'd give 2.x firmware users some Instinctiv love again. A few days ago version 2.0 was released, and after a short flurry of updates (we're now at 2.0.9, going up on the MMi repo here in the next hour), its a nice stable build - and working great.

[Review] These New iPhone "Web Browsers"
Jan 15, 2009 - 4:00 AM - by cash7c3
Well these new "Web Browsers" have made their way into the AppStore. Well sort of new. They are all based on WebKit (read Safari) so they are more like the iPhone's Safari browser with a different look or a plugin for the current Safari. They are not real browsers like Opera Mini. They are all marketed on the AppStore as having some great functionality that Safari doesn't offer but do they impress? Reviews from best to worst -- or something.

Steve Jobs Steps Down

image by xkcd.com EDIT: Comic is merely to soften the harshness of the story - a few folks have been offended, its not our purpose to tick folks off. We wish Steve well and hope for the best for he and his family same as you. The pic stays.

Until June, for now, that is. The mighty Steve has been sick for a while, and notably didn't even appear at this year's Macworld keynote, having Phil Schiller stand in to deliver the lack-luster news for the hungry Apple-enthusiasts attending.

Steve had previously stated he'd be standing fast at the helm during his recovery, but apparently that's no... [Read More]

The iPhone Dev team's redsn0w.com site (with just a picture, see above) has been up a few days. Rumors had floated around about what it was, but no word from the dev team themselves, other than a few clever remarks about skiing accidents (thanks, pumpkin).

A new post on the dev team blog popped up today, suggesting strongly that the image is referring to the iPod Touch 2G.

Quote:
Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
There is one other device…
It fits in your pocket..
What can it

BEWARE! Safari Vulnerability Discovered in OS X and Windows
Jan 14, 2009 - 4:14 AM - by cash7c3
Beware Safari and OmniWeb users - you are not safe while browsing the web. Brian Masternbrook has discovered a vulnerability in Safari that will allow malicious sites to hop into your computer and read whatever files they want on your hard drive.

This major security threat has been acknowledged by Apple and is known to effect Safari on both Leopard and Windows. At this time Apple has not commented on when a fix will be released. The threat also extends further for OS X users by simply slicking a link in their mail, IMs, etc.

Fortunately Masternbrook listed out some simple steps you can take to protect yourself.

For OS X users other browsers like FireFox or Camino are safe to use. You can however fix Safari.
  1. Download and install the RCDefaultApp preference pane, following the included instructions.
  2. Open System Preferences and choose the Default Applications

See How iTunes Embeds Email in DRM Free Tracks
Jan 13, 2009 - 4:26 PM - by AppleChic

So the iTunes store is almost completely DRM free and will be entirely DRM free by spring…great we can now use our DRM free music on any device we want without any stupid hang-ups.

This is all good and dandy as long as everything is legit…which of course it is, right?

iTunes Plus Files now make up the entire music store and every file stores your account info and email. Even though there is no copy protection, the downloads still contain the email you have when you registered with iTunes.

So while you can physically share files with friends, family, etc. it can still all be traced back to you.

If you want to see for yourself how iTunes is keeping tabs on you, CNet says it's easy:

"If you're interested in an easy way to check your own files, find an iTunes Plus file on your computer. Then choose to open it with a text editor (Windows Notepad works fine). It'll take a while to open and will appear to be full of... [Read More]
